Alcohol and Children in Care

Children and young people are likely to be curious about alcohol. This is normal. A child in your care may already have had experiences with alcohol or spent time with friends who drink. However, as a foster carer, directly giving alcohol to a foster child could get you into a lot of trouble.

What you will learn

  • How common it is for children and young people to consume alcohol.
  • How to talk to children and young people about alcohol.
  • About the legislation on alcohol.
  • About the risks of alcohol consumption and dependency.
  • About risky behaviours that can be associated with drinking, including drink-driving.
  • About the risks of having your drink spiked, and how to stay safe in social situations.
  • What to do if you suspect alcohol poisoning.
  • What you can do to support a child with alcohol addiction.
